DIY: Homemade Hot Chocolate

 The holidays are here which means it's time to curl up by the fire with a soft blanket and a good book. And of course, a cup of hot cocoa. Why not skip the typical prepackaged hot chocolate this season and try something new? We've compiled a list of our top four homemade hot chocolate recipes-all with a bit of a twist! So whether you're in the mood for a bit of spice or even more chocolate, we've got you covered.


Nutella Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups skim milk
  • 2 tbsp Nutella
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • Marshmallows
  • Crushed hazelnuts

Directions:

Heat the milk on medium-high until it begins to steam. Then add the Nutella, cocoa powder, and sugar. Whisk until dissolved. Add the marshmallows and hazelnuts as a topping and serve.

S'mores Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate melting wafers
  • 1 tsp marshmallow syrup
  • 1/2 tsp white sugar
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp coffee grounds
  • 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 smidgen of ground nutmeg
  • Mini marshmallows
  • 2-3 graham crackers
  • Chocolate syrup

Directions:

Bring the milk to a simmer and add the chocolate until it has melted. Continue to add the syrup, sugar, vanilla, grounds, and spices until it has dissolved. Microwave a small plate of marshmallows for 10-15 seconds. Serve with marshmallows and crushed graham crackers.

Belgian Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 ounces dark Belgian chocolate
  • 1 1/2 ounces milk chocolate
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 dash of cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp white sugar

Directions:

Heat chocolate, salt, and half of the milk until the chocolate melts. Then add the rest of the ingredients. Stir until the ingredients have dissolved.

Gingerbread Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 3-4 tbsp light brown sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg

Directions:

Mix together the cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and spices. Put the spices over a low-medium temperature and begin to gradually add the milk. Stir until everything has dissolved.
